There are those who smoke only one pipe and those who prefer to smoke various types. Then there are those that have tried a wide range of pipes, dreaming of the pipe that has not yet been created, and so decide to design and create their own original pipe. This is what happened to us at Al Pascià.
We will always keep our numerous pipes, as it is such a pleasure to smoke them in rotation and savour different tastes. Yet, we had been thinking about this non-existent pipe for some time. This was prompted by a Calabash, which owes its cool, dry, mellow smoke to an air chamber in the gourd beneath the bowl, which allows the smoke to expand, cool down and lose moisture. The only thing is that the Calabash is marvelous for armchair smoking, less so if you want to take a stroll. So we wondered if there was a way to design a briar pipe that would combine the features of a Calabash (without the gourd), and portability.
Actually, a few craftsmen have been working on such a project for some time, to produce a limited number of pipes. The problem was to make something affordable that had originally been only made for the lucky few. A partner was needed, who could perfect the design, identify the technical problems and launch production, and the Gubbels company, which has a good relationship with Al Pascià, proved to be the ideal partner. There followed two intense, fruitful years of a partnership to refine the design through various trials, until finally the product emerged. This product has proved to be so inspiring that Gubbels has decided to become its global distributor, as well as its producer. Let’s now look at its features.
The first thing that catches your eye is the broad stem that makes the pipe chubby. The technical feature is hidden within: the large air chamber that reproduces the Calabash effect without the need for a gourd. A methalcrylate ferrule into which the mouthpiece is inserted closes the chamber; the mouthpiece fits easily into the ferrule by applying some pressure and it is also easy to remove, which facilitates cleaning.
The new, eye-catching Al Pascià Curvy pipe is available in two different versions that share the broad stem. If you examine it more closely, touching it and holding it in your hand you will notice its light weight, and its refined design and shape, guaranteed by Gubbels. When you fill up the bowl and light it you will immediately taste the cool, dry, smooth smoke that you would not expert in such a compact pipe. Thus, this new Al Pascià pipe is indeed a wonderful surprise: the pipe that didn’t exist now exists.
We presented this innovative product line for the first time at InterTabac 2015 (Messe Westfalenhallen Dortmund).
